DVA

DVA psychology by telehealth

Telehealth Psychology Australia provides psychology sessions for DVA Gold Card holders, and White Card holders with an accepted mental health condition. We see clients by secure video, anywhere in Australia. There is no office to attend and nothing to install. You meet your psychologist from a private space of your choosing.

Your psychologist would be one of our Registered Psychologists with the Psychology Board of Australia through AHPRA. Both hold general registration with no area-of-practice endorsement (generalist scope), and there is no clinical-area fee tier.

Psychological support for veterans and DVA cardholders

Sessions run for approximately 50 minutes (46 to 50 minutes) and use approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, schema therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and supportive therapy. Where it is useful, we use brief validated measures such as the K10, PHQ-9, GAD-7, and DASS-21 to track how you are going over time.

Australian clinical guidance, including from the Australian Psychological Society, supports psychological therapies such as CBT and ACT for conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma, as does the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (see NICE guidance NG222 on depression, CG113 on anxiety and NG116 on post-traumatic stress disorder). Individual experiences vary.

How sessions work

  • Secure video, anywhere in Australia
  • About 50 minutes (46 to 50 minutes)
  • Gold Card, or White Card with an accepted mental health condition
  • CBT, ACT, DBT skills, schema, EMDR and supportive therapy

What you need in place

DVA funds psychology sessions for eligible cardholders. Your GP provides a D904 referral, and we bill DVA directly so there is nothing for you to pay.

If you are not sure which card you hold, or whether a condition is accepted, your GP or DVA can confirm this before you book. We are glad to help you work out the next step.

What needs to be in place

  • A DVA Gold Card, or a White Card with an accepted mental health condition.
  • A D904 referral from your GP, sent to us by email or through Medical Objects.
  • Your DVA card details and contact details, so we can confirm eligibility with DVA before the first session.
  • A private space and an internet connection. Sessions are by secure video in your browser, with nothing to install.

Do I pay anything under DVA?

For eligible DVA cardholders with a D904 referral, sessions are billed directly to DVA at the DVA rate. You do not pay out of pocket.

No gap Billed directly to DVA, not to you, for sessions covered by your card and referral.

If your referral needs renewing, or a session would fall outside what DVA covers, we will tell you before it is booked so there are no surprises.

For GPs and DVA providers

We work with GPs and other DVA providers to support a veteran’s care, and keep the referrer informed with the client’s consent.

How to refer

  • Send the D904 referral to admin@thpa.au or through Medical Objects, with the client’s DVA card details.
  • Confirm the client’s contact details and consent to be contacted.
  • We arrange an initial session by secure video and confirm scheduling with the client.

Reports and communication

  • We provide progress updates to the referring GP with the client’s consent, including a review letter after session 6 and at session 10 or discharge.
  • We bill DVA directly. There is no gap for the client.
  • Telehealth is delivered through Halaxy Telehealth: browser-based video by Amazon Chime, hosted on AWS in Sydney, with AES-256 encryption. Sessions are not recorded.

Concerns we commonly work with

We provide psychological support for the kinds of concerns veterans and DVA cardholders commonly bring, including:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Adjustment to injury, chronic pain or changed circumstances, and grief and loss

Treatment is shaped around your situation and what you want from it. Individual experiences vary.
